Chapter 4 - The Final Nail

"Where the hell are you?" David’s voice boomed through the speaker. He didn't sound worried; he sounded deeply inconvenienced.
"I am somewhere safe. With my daughter," I replied coldly.
"Clara, you are blowing this way out of proportion," David sighed, using his signature gaslighting tone. "My mom called me crying. She said Mia stole the family heirloom. They had to discipline her so she doesn't grow up to be a criminal. You should be thanking them for stepping in while you were away working."
I closed my eyes, letting the sheer absurdity of his words wash over me. "David, your mother shaved your daughter's head. Your father punched me in the face."
"My dad said you were being hysterical and aggressive! He was just trying to calm you down!" David barked. "And as for the hair, it grows back. It's an old-school punishment. Look, I'm flying back to Houston tonight. I expect you and Mia to be back at the house, unpacked, with an apology ready for my parents."
"Or what?" I challenged.
"Or I'll use my family's lawyers to take Mia away from you entirely," he threatened, his voice dropping to a vicious whisper. "You have no money, Clara. You have no family here. You have nothing. Come home and stop acting like a victim."
"You're right, David," I said softly, staring at the flash drive in my hand holding the video footage. "I'll see you very soon."

I hung up the phone. He had just handed me the key to his own destruction. A recorded threat of legal blackmail and a casual endorsement of child abuse. My husband wasn't a victim of his toxic family; he was their star player.
I picked up Mia, strapped her into her car seat, and programmed the GPS to the nearest police precinct. It was time to go to war.
