Chapter 13 - Uncovering the Hoard

I sat in Eleanor's plush office while she projected a massive spreadsheet onto the wall.
"David claimed on his financial disclosure that he only had $50,000 in savings," Eleanor smirked. "He lied under oath."
She clicked a button, revealing a web of bank accounts. "David has been siphoning his massive salary into an offshore trust in the Cayman Islands, under his mother’s maiden name. He’s been doing this since the day you two got married. He has over three million dollars hidden away."
I gasped. I had spent the last four years clipping coupons and buying Mia's clothes at thrift stores because David claimed we were "house poor" and building a future.

"Because he hid this during the discovery phase, the judge is going to penalize him severely," Eleanor explained. "In Texas, judges don't take kindly to financial fraud in a divorce. We aren't just going for fifty percent, Clara. We are going for the lion's share. He is going to be paying for Mia's college, your new house, and your peace of mind."
I looked at the numbers on the screen. It wasn't about the money. It was about the power. They had used their wealth to keep me trapped, compliant, and terrified. Now, that exact same wealth was going to set me free.
