Chapter 5 - The Precinct

Walking into the police station felt like crossing a threshold into a new life. The precinct was busy, loud, and intimidating, but I held my head high. I asked the desk sergeant to speak to a detective regarding domestic assault and child abuse.

Within twenty minutes, I was sitting in a sterile interview room with Detective Ramirez, a sharp-eyed woman who looked like she took absolutely zero nonsense from anyone.

"Take me through it from the beginning, Mrs. Vance," Ramirez said, clicking her pen.

I laid the folder on the metal table. I pulled out the medical reports, the photographs of my face, and the agonizing pictures of Mia's shaved, nicked scalp. The detective's professional demeanor cracked slightly. Her jaw tightened as she looked at the photos of my four-year-old.

"My father-in-law struck me," I stated. "And my mother-in-law subjected my daughter to physical and severe emotional abuse."

"This is horrific," Detective Ramirez said softly. "But in cases of 'discipline,' the law can sometimes be tricky unless there is proof of malice or excessive force. Your assault is straightforward, but for the child..."

"I have proof," I interrupted.

I slid my phone across the table and hit play. I watched the detective's eyes track the screen. I watched her see Chloe steal the necklace. I watched her witness Beatrice and Chloe conspiring to frame a toddler.

When the video ended, the silence in the interrogation room was heavy.

"They conspired to frame a four-year-old to cover up grand larceny, and then physically assaulted the child to maintain the lie," I said, my voice steady. "And I have a recorded phone call from my husband validating the abuse and threatening to take my child."

Detective Ramirez stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Mrs. Vance, stay right here. I'm going to the District Attorney's office to get warrants drawn up immediately. These people are not sleeping in their own beds tonight."
