Chapter 6 - The Warrants Execute

I waited at the precinct for hours, keeping Mia entertained with coloring books provided by a sympathetic dispatcher. Around 6:00 PM, Detective Ramirez returned, accompanied by two uniformed officers.
"The warrants are signed," she said, a grim satisfaction in her voice. "We have felony assault for Arthur, child abuse and filing a false police report for Beatrice, and grand theft for Chloe. We are executing the arrest warrants right now."
I asked to ride in the back of the detective's unmarked car. I needed to see it.
We pulled onto the manicured, wealthy street of my in-laws' neighborhood just as the sun was setting. Three squad cars were already parked on the pristine lawn, lights flashing, bathing the expensive brick facade in alternating red and blue.
Arthur was the first one brought out. He was in his silk pajamas, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back. The arrogant, untouchable patriarch looked utterly bewildered, shouting about calling his lawyer and suing the department.
Then came Chloe, sobbing hysterically, wearing the exact same designer clothes she had bought with her stolen money.
Finally, Beatrice emerged. Her hair was a mess, her face pale with shock. As the officer guided her toward the cruiser, her eyes locked onto the unmarked car parked across the street. She saw me sitting in the passenger seat.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply raised my hand and tapped my temple, mimicking a shaving motion.
Beatrice’s face contorted in absolute rage, and she lunged toward the car, screaming obscenities before two officers wrestled her into the back of the police vehicle. The neighbors were all on their porches, whispering and pointing. The untouchable family was finally exposed.
