Chapter 14 - The Deposition

The civil deposition for the divorce was held in a neutral conference room. I walked in wearing a sharp, tailored suit, my head held high. Mia was safe at a secure daycare.

David sat across the table, flanked by two expensive, exhausted-looking lawyers. He looked terrible. He had lost weight, his suit was wrinkled, and the arrogant sneer was completely gone.

Eleanor didn't waste time. She dropped the stack of financial documents onto the table with a loud thud.

"Mr. Vance, can you explain the three million dollars in the Cayman trust?" Eleanor asked smoothly.

David’s lawyers paled. They hadn't known. David stammered, looking at his attorneys for help, but they were furiously reading the documents Eleanor provided.

"It's... it's a family investment," David choked out.

"A family investment that you funded entirely from your marital income, lied about on a sworn affidavit, and intended to keep from your wife," Eleanor summarized flawlessly. "Let the record reflect the perjury."

She then pulled out the transcript of the voicemails and the hidden camera footage.

"Are you still seeking partial custody of Mia, Mr. Vance? The child your mother abused while your father assaulted her mother? The abuse you validated on a recorded line?"

David put his head in his hands. He was completely, utterly broken. "No," he whispered. "I surrender custody."
