Chapter 19 - Rebuilding

A year later, life looked entirely different.
With the settlement money, I bought a beautiful, sunlit house in a quiet, safe suburb outside of Austin. There were no hidden cameras needed here. The house was filled with warmth, laughter, and an absolute mountain of strawberry lollipops.
Mia was in play therapy and thriving. The nightmares of the freezing laundry room had faded, replaced by memories of park dates, painting classes, and baking cookies in our massive kitchen.

Best of all, her hair had grown back. It was a beautiful, bouncy bob of blonde curls that framed her bright, smiling face perfectly. She loved wearing cute bows and colorful headbands, proud of every single strand.
I opened my own small consulting business, utilizing the skills I had honed before David forced me to quit my career. I was independent, wealthy, and most importantly, I was safe. I was a mother who had walked through fire for her child, and we had emerged completely unburned.
