Chapter 9 - The Secret Weapon

Lorenzo left me and Lily hidden away with Marco and a small, heavily armed garrison of his most elite, fiercely loyal guards.
He took the rest of his trusted enforcers and drove straight into the heart of Naples to rally his remaining allied families for a bloody war.
The historic, cobblestone streets of the city rapidly turned into an active, chaotic war zone literally overnight.
Frantic news reports flashed continuously on the villa’s massive television, showing terrifying footage of burning shipping warehouses, police blockades, and violent street shootouts.
I nervously paced the hard wooden floor for hours on end, terrified beyond belief that a news anchor would suddenly announce Lorenzo’s brutal assassination.
Marco desperately tried to reassure me that everything was under control, but I caught him constantly checking his heavy weapons with a deeply worried frown.
“The boss knows exactly what he is doing, Mrs. Hayes, he has survived much worse odds than this before,” Marco said, trying to sound confident.
But I knew deep in my heart that the combined forces of the Morettis and Camilla's powerful father heavily outnumbered Lorenzo's fractured syndicate.
I couldn't just sit there completely useless in a luxury cage and wait for a tragic phone call telling me the man I loved was dead.
My mind raced desperately, trying to think of any possible advantage we had, any secret weapon that could shift the impossible odds in his favor.
Suddenly, a chilling, long-forgotten memory of a whispered conversation with my late husband violently forced its way to the forefront of my mind.
Arthur had once drunkenly bragged about a hidden, heavily encrypted digital ledger he kept as a desperate insurance policy against the mob.
“Marco,” I called out loudly, my voice echoing sharply in the quiet, tense living room.
“Where exactly did Lorenzo put the cardboard box of Arthur's old belongings that his men recovered from my apartment?”
Marco frowned in deep confusion but obediently went to the basement and quickly brought me the dusty box of my dead husband's things.

I frantically tore the torn inner lining of his favorite old leather jacket completely apart, my trembling fingers searching desperately for a solid object.
Hidden deeply inside a sewn pocket was a small, black, heavily encrypted flash drive that held the ultimate key to destroying the Moretti empire.
