Chapter 4 - The Truth Unravels

Later that evening, after the chaotic events in the foyer had somewhat settled, Lorenzo returned to our room carrying a thick, manila folder.
He tossed it casually onto the heavy glass coffee table right in front of me, the loud slap of the paper echoing in the quiet space.
“I had my best intelligence men dig deep into your late husband's hidden past,” he said, taking a seat across from me.
I hesitated for a long time, my trembling fingers hovering over the clasp before I finally gathered the courage to open the file.
Inside the folder were dozens of surveillance photos showing my beloved Arthur shaking hands with known, dangerous mobsters from rival factions.
There were copies of secret bank statements, gambling debts, and encrypted messages that painted a picture of a man I never truly knew.
“Arthur was playing a very dangerous game on both sides of the underworld,” Lorenzo explained softly, watching my expression shatter.
“He owed a massive, insurmountable debt to the Morettis, and he desperately tried to pay it off by selling my organization's most guarded secrets.”
I felt all the air completely leave my lungs, a suffocating wave of betrayal and profound grief washing over my tired soul.
“No, that has to be a mistake, because it is entirely impossible,” I cried out, hot tears streaming uncontrollably down my flushed cheeks.
“He was a good, honest man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family!”
Lorenzo knelt directly in front of me, his massive frame surprisingly gentle as he reached out to wipe a tear from my jaw.
“He left you with absolutely nothing but his crushing debts, Elena, leaving you to scrub floors just to feed your little girl.”
“And now, because of his reckless choices, the Morettis are using this innocent knitted toy as a direct, violent warning to me.”
“They know exactly where you are, and they are using you as bait to start a massive war in the streets of Naples.”
I buried my face in my hands, sobbing for the life I thought I had and the terrifying reality I was now thrust into.

Lorenzo didn't pull away; instead, he stayed right there on the floor, offering a silent, grounding presence in the midst of my collapsing world.
I realized then that the most feared man in Italy was currently the only person standing between us and absolute destruction.
