Chapter 9 - Five Years of Shadows

The Mediterranean sun beat down mercilessly on the cobblestone streets of Marseille, France, casting long, dramatic shadows across the bustling harbor. In the courtyard of a modest stone café overlooking the turquoise water, a five-year-old boy with dark, unruly hair and striking, intelligent gray eyes sat drawing on a paper placemat.

"Leo," Elena called out softly from behind the counter, wiping down the espresso machine with a clean towel. "Your pain au chocolat is ready, mon chéri."

Elena looked nothing like the terrified, broken woman who had cowered beneath an executive desk five years ago. Her long hair was cut into a sharp, sophisticated bob and dyed a rich auburn. She carried herself with the poised assurance of a woman who had rebuilt her soul from scratch. Under the alias of "Helene Laurent," she had spent the last half-decade mastering international finance, working remotely for European boutique investment firms while hiding in plain sight.

She walked over and placed the pastry in front of her son, brushing a stray curl from his forehead. Leo looked up, giving her the exact same lopsided smile that Julian used to wear before the world fell apart. The resemblance was striking—and dangerous.

"Mama," Leo asked, pointing his crayon at a sleek, matte-black superyacht docking in the harbor below. "Look at that boat. It has a giant gold 'P' on the side."

Elena’s heart skipped a painful beat. She turned her gaze toward the harbor, shielding her eyes against the glare of the sun. There, anchored majestically in the deep water, was The Empress—the flagship luxury vessel of Pinnacle Industries.

Her grip on the metal serving tray tightened until her knuckles turned white. Why were they in Marseille? Had Marcus’s diversion finally unraveled?

As she watched, a group of figures disembarked from the yacht’s private launch and stepped onto the dock. At the center of the entourage walked Vivian Vance, her signature crimson designer suits replaced by sharp white summer linen, looking just as imperious and venomous as ever. And walking beside her, looking aged, hollow-eyed, and impeccably dressed in a dark tailored suit, was Julian.

Elena instinctively stepped in front of Leo, blocking his view of his father. The Vance family had brought their playground to her sanctuary. The five years of running were over.
