Chapter 6 - The Neon Sanctuary

The rain came down in torrents, turning the back alleys of the industrial district into slick, black ribbons of asphalt. Marcus’s sedan tore through the empty streets, its headlights off to avoid detection by city traffic cameras that Pinnacle Industries could easily hack.

In the backseat, Elena writhed in agony. The contractions were now four minutes apart, intense and unrelenting. The stress of the chase had fully ruptured her membranes; her amniotic fluid soaked into the fabric of the rear seats.

"We can't go to St. Jude’s or Memorial," Marcus said, his eyes scanning the rearview mirror every three seconds. "Vivian sits on the hospital board of every major medical center in the metro area. The moment you register under your name—or even a Jane Doe that matches your description—she’ll know."

"Where... where are we going?" Elena cried out, gripping the door handle so hard her knuckles ached. "The baby is coming, Marcus! I can't hold it back!"

Marcus whipped the steering wheel to the left, diving down a narrow alleyway illuminated by the buzzing neon sign of a rundown free clinic: St. Agnes Community Health. It was located in the heart of the city's most neglected district, a place where people went when they didn't want to be found by the system.

He slammed the brakes and jumped out, throwing open the rear door to lift Elena into his arms. She was too exhausted to walk, her head falling back against his shoulder as rain drenched them both in seconds.

Marcus kicked open the double doors of the clinic. The waiting room was empty save for a sleeping transient and a tired receptionist scrolling on her phone behind a plexiglass window.

"I need a doctor right now!" Marcus roared, his command echoing off the linoleum floors. "Active labor, thirty-six weeks, no prenatal records here! Move!"

An older woman in faded blue scrubs emerged from the back hallway, taking one look at Elena’s pale, sweat-drenched face and the blood-stained white silk dress dangling below her coat.

"Bring her to trauma room two," the doctor ordered calmly, not asking a single bureaucratic question. "Let’s get this baby out before whatever you two are running from catches up to you."
