Chapter 5 - The Sub-Basement Escape

The freight elevator descended with a agonizingly slow, mechanical hum, shaking slightly as it passed the tenth floor. Elena leaned heavily against the cold steel wall, her breathing ragged as Marcus monitored the floor indicator. The fluorescent light overhead flickered, casting eerie shadows across the small space.
"When we hit the garage, keep your head down," Marcus instructed, drawing a black 9mm sidearm from his holster and checking the magazine. "My vehicle is parked near the loading dock. It’s an unmarked sedan with tinted windows."
"Why are you doing this, Marcus?" Elena asked weakly, wiping sweat from her forehead. "If Vivian finds out you helped me, she’ll ruin you. She’ll kill you."
Marcus’s jaw tightened. "My loyalty was to your husband because I believed he was different from the rest of the Vance family. But when I saw Vivian’s orders to terminate your pregnancy and frame it as a medical complication... I drew my line. Nobody deserves what they have planned for you."
The elevator chimed softly as it reached the sub-basement level. The doors slid open to reveal a dimly lit concrete parking garage, smelling strongly of motor oil and damp earth. A row of luxury executive vehicles sat parked in the VIP section, but Marcus guided Elena toward the utilitarian service area.
Suddenly, the screech of tires echoed off the concrete pillars. A black SUV rounded the corner at high speed, its high beams blinding them. The vehicle slammed to a halt blocking the exit ramp, and four men in dark civilian clothes jumped out, their hands hovering near their waistbands.
"Get behind the pillar!" Marcus barked, pushing Elena toward a thick reinforced concrete support column just as the first shot rang out.
The bullet shattered the taillight of a nearby van, showering the floor with red plastic shards. Marcus returned fire instantly, his weapon barking twice with deafening precision, forcing the attackers to duck behind their SUV.
"Can you run?" Marcus yelled over the echoing gunfire, his eyes darting toward a service exit door twenty yards away.
May you like
Elena held her belly, gritting her teeth against another agonizing wave of pain. "I don't have a choice," she gasped.
"On three," Marcus said, laying down a covering barrage of fire toward the SUV. "One... two... THREE!"
