Chapter 11 - The Ghost in the Machine

The Pinnacle scout looked Marcus up and down, recognizing the unmistakable posture of a trained operative, and wisely decided not to push the issue. He muttered an apology, pocketed his cash, and retreated toward the harbor promenade.
Once the coast was clear, Marcus turned to Elena, his expression grim. "You need to leave Marseille tonight, Elena. Their arrival isn't a coincidence."
"Did they track us?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs as she ushered Leo toward the back stairs. "After five years, Marcus? How?"
"Not through you," Marcus explained, following her inside and locking the heavy wooden doors of the café. "Through the financial markets. For the last six months, an anonymous hedge fund has been aggressively shorting Pinnacle’s most vulnerable tech subsidiaries, buying up their debt and forcing board restructurings. That fund is registered in Cyprus, but the IP addresses routing the trades trace back to southern France."
Elena’s lips curled into a cold, defiant smile. "I told you I was going to burn their empire to the ground, Marcus. I didn't spend five years just hiding; I spent it finding every crack in Julian and Vivian’s financial armor."
"You did too well," Marcus warned, though a hint of pride flickered in his eyes. "Vivian convinced Julian to sail here to personally negotiate with the mysterious 'European investor' who is draining their liquidity. They set up a meeting at the Hotel Intercontinental tonight at eight o'clock. They don't know the investor is Helene Laurent... and they certainly don't know Helene Laurent is the woman they tried to murder five years ago."
Elena walked over to the window, looking out through the lace curtains at the harbor where The Empress sat gleaming in the sun. She thought of the dust raining down on her in the dark penthouse, the sound of Vivian’s iron club hitting the wood, and the five years of stolen fatherhood Julian had suffered because he was too weak to stand up to his sister.
"Then we shouldn't disappoint them," Elena said softly, turning back to Marcus with a look of absolute resolve that made even the hardened Marine shiver.

"What are you saying?" Marcus asked.
"I’m saying I’m done running," Elena replied, her voice steady as steel. "Contact the Intercontinental concierge. Tell them the CEO of Apex Capital will attend the dinner tonight. But she requires a private room... and absolute security."
