Chapter 3 - The Emergency Stairwell

The heavy fire doors slammed shut behind Elena, vibrating in their frames as she threw her body weight against the crash bar. She stumbled onto the concrete landing of the thirty-second floor, her breath coming in burning, ragged gasps. Below her, the stairwell plunged into a dizzying abyss of dim fluorescent lighting and echoing shadows.
"Lockdown initiated," a robotic voice chimed through the overhead PA system, followed by the terrifying clack-clack-clack of magnetic seals engaging on the stairwell doors. Vivian had triggered the executive security override.
Elena gripped the cold metal handrail, her knees shaking so violently she could barely stand. She couldn't go back into the penthouse, and the elevators were paralyzed. Her only way out was down—thirty-two flights of concrete steps while eight and a half months pregnant.
A sharp, searing pain tightened across her lower abdomen, causing her to cry out and lean against the cinderblock wall. A contraction. The terror and physical trauma were pushing her body into early labor. She breathed through the agony, counting the seconds until the tightening released, leaving her drenched in a cold sweat.
Above her, the heavy door to the penthouse floor groaned as someone threw their weight against it from the other side. "You can't go down thirty floors in your condition, Elena!" Vivian’s muffled voice echoed through the reinforced steel. "Be reasonable! Open the door and let's get you to a doctor. Julian wants to make sure his son gets the best care."

"Liar!" Elena screamed back, her voice bouncing off the concrete walls. She knew what kind of medical care Vivian had waiting for her—a private clinic where mothers disappeared and babies were handed over to wealthy dynasties.
Gripping the rail with both hands, Elena began her slow, torturous descent. By the time she reached the twenty-fifth floor, her shoes were gone, discarded to keep her footsteps silent. The pain in her abdomen returned, sharper and longer this time. But as she rounded the landing of the twenty-fourth floor, she froze. From far below, echoing up the central shaft, came the unmistakable sound of heavy, tactical combat boots ascending the stairs at a rapid run. She was trapped between the predator above and the hounds below.
