Chapter 7 - The Midnight Birth

The sterile, blinding lights of Trauma Room Two seemed to pulse in time with Elena’s heartbeat. Dr. Sarah Evans, a veteran obstetrician who had left high-society medicine for the anonymity of the inner-city clinic, worked with quiet, rapid efficiency.
"You're fully dilated, Elena," Dr. Evans said, her voice a steady, grounding anchor amidst the chaos. "The baby’s heart rate is elevated due to maternal stress, but strong. On the next contraction, I need you to give me everything you have. Forget the fear. Just push."
Outside the swinging doors of the trauma room, Marcus stood guard, his back pressed against the wall, his weapon concealed under his jacket but ready for instant deployment. He watched the entrance of the clinic like a hawk, knowing that every minute they remained stationary increased the risk of detection.
Inside, Elena gripped the metal side rails of the birthing bed. She thought of Vivian's cruel taunts in the penthouse. She thought of Julian, the man who had promised to protect her from his family's venomous reach, now miles away in a Swiss boardroom while his sister tried to erase his wife. Anger—pure, hot, and protective—flooded her system, overriding the exhaustion.
"Push now, Elena!" Dr. Evans commanded.
Elena let out a guttural scream that shook her chest, bearing down with every ounce of remaining strength. The pain was blinding, a shattering crescendo that seemed to tear the very fabric of her reality apart. And then, suddenly, the pressure vanished, replaced by an overwhelming rush of relief.
For two terrifying seconds, there was silence in the room. Elena popped her eyes open, her heart stopping in her chest. "Why isn't he crying? Why isn't he—"
Then, a high-pitched, indignant wail filled the small trauma room.

Dr. Evans smiled from behind her surgical mask, lifting a squalling, healthy baby boy into the air before placing him directly onto Elena’s chest. "Welcome to the world, little fighter," the doctor whispered.
Elena wrapped her trembling arms around her son, pressing her lips against his damp, warm head. His skin was soft, his tiny fingers instantly clutching the edge of her gown. In that moment, looking down at his perfect face, Elena made a silent, unbreakable oath: The Vance family will never touch you. I will burn their empire to the ground before I let them take you from me.
