Chapter 8 - The Vanishing Act

The joy of the birth was short-lived. Just forty-five minutes after the baby’s first cry, Marcus burst through the swinging doors of the trauma room, his face pale and tense.

"We have to move," he said sharply, locking eyes with Dr. Evans. "A black SUV just did a slow pass around the block. They’re pinging cellular towers in the area looking for my phone's last known trajectory. I destroyed the SIM card, but they’re closing the net."

Elena tried to sit up, clutching her newborn son to her chest. She was weak, dizzy from blood loss and exhaustion, but the mother tiger inside her refused to let her body fail. "I can't run anymore, Marcus. Look at me."

Dr. Evans stepped between them, her expression resolute. "She can't travel in a vehicle without severe risking of hemorrhaging, and the baby needs stabilization. You need a diversion."

The doctor turned to Elena, taking her hand gently. "My sister runs a safe house for battered women three blocks from here, connected through the old underground subway utility tunnels. It won't show up on any GPS or property maps owned by Vanguard or Pinnacle. But officially, as far as the medical system is concerned... this baby didn't survive the traumatic labor."

Elena’s eyes widened in horror. "No! I won't let them think—"

"Listen to me," Dr. Evans interrupted firmly. "If Vivian Vance believes the heir is dead, the hunt ends tonight. She wants the child to control the family trust; a dead baby has no leverage for her. It gives you the one thing you need right now: time to disappear, heal, and plan."

Marcus nodded slowly, realizing the brilliance of the lie. "I can plant blood evidence in my abandoned sedan near the river. Make it look like a tragic accident during the escape."

Elena looked down at her sleeping son, his tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically against her heartbeat. The thought of letting the world believe her precious boy was gone broke her heart, but letting Vivian raise him as a pawn in corporate warfare was a fate worse than death.

"Do it," Elena whispered, a tear dropping onto her baby’s cheek. "Tell the world we're gone. But mark my words, Dr. Evans... one day, we will rise from the dead."
