Chapter 20 - The True Meaning of Family

Later that night, after the guests had left and the children were asleep, Liam and Maya stood on their back deck, wrapped in a blanket, looking up at the stars.
“Do you ever think about her?” Maya asked quietly, her breath misting in the cold air.
Liam knew who she meant.
“Sometimes,” Liam admitted, pulling Maya closer. “But only to remind myself of what I almost lost. I spent my whole life thinking family meant obligation. I thought it meant enduring abuse because of a bloodline.”
He turned Maya around so she was facing him, looking deep into her eyes.
“But family isn't blood, Maya. Family is the person who holds your hand in the dark. Family is the person who builds you up, not the one who tears you down. You and the kids… you are my family. You always will be.”
