Chapter 14 - The ArrestThe police arrived in less than three minutes.

Eleanor was hauled to her feet, her designer blazer scraped and covered in clinic parking lot dirt. When the officers ran her name and saw the active permanent restraining order, they didn't hesitate.

They pulled out their handcuffs.

“You can’t arrest me!” Eleanor yelled, thrashing against the officers. “Do you know who I am? That woman stole my son! She is a liar!”

“Ma'am, stop resisting or we will add a charge of assaulting a police officer,” the heavy-set cop warned, clicking the cold steel cuffs around her wrists.

Maya stood safely behind the security guard, clutching Leo to her chest. Her heart was racing, but as she watched Eleanor being shoved into the back of a police cruiser, the fear evaporated. Eleanor wasn't an all-powerful matriarch anymore. She was just a sad, desperate criminal suffering the consequences of her own actions.

Liam arrived at the precinct an hour later. The police asked if he wanted to press charges for the violation of the restraining order.

“Yes,” Liam said without a shred of hesitation. “Press every single charge the DA will allow. Aggravated harassment, violation of a protective order, reckless endangerment. Throw the book at her.”

Eleanor spent the night in a concrete holding cell. For a woman obsessed with control and public image, it was a fate far worse than death.
