Chapter 17 - Leo's First Birthday

The sun was shining brightly in the backyard of their new home. Colorful balloons bobbed in the breeze, and a large banner reading "Happy 1st Birthday Leo!" hung across the patio.
The yard was filled with laughter. Maya’s family had flown in. Friends from work were sharing beers and grilling burgers.
Arthur sat in a lawn chair, bouncing a giggling, one-year-old Leo on his knee. The baby was thriving—chubby, happy, and deeply loved.
Liam stood by the grill, watching his wife laugh with her sister. Maya looked radiant, completely healed, glowing with a confidence she had never been allowed to possess in Eleanor’s presence.
Arthur walked over, handing Leo to Liam. “You threw a great party, son.”
“Thanks, Dad,” Liam smiled, kissing the top of Leo’s head. “I’m glad you moved out here. Having you ten minutes away has been a lifesaver.”
Arthur patted Liam’s back. “I wouldn’t miss this for the world. You broke the cycle, Liam. You did what I was too cowardly to do when you were young. You protected your family.”

Liam looked out at the yard. There was no tension. There were no hushed, passive-aggressive whispers. There was no fear of a looming matriarch waiting to tear someone down for a slight imperfection in the table setting.
There was only peace.
