Chapter 10 - The Deposition

The conference room in the law office was suffocatingly tense.
Eleanor sat across the mahogany table, flanked by her attorney. She wore a tailored suit, looking every bit the aggrieved, wealthy grandmother. She offered Liam a sad, manipulative smile, which he completely ignored.
Marcus Vance started the recording device and began the deposition.
For the first hour, Eleanor spun a masterful web of lies. She claimed she loved Maya like a daughter. She claimed she was only trying to help the young couple. She swore under oath that Maya had simply "tripped" and that she had been rushing to help her when Liam burst through the door.
“Mrs. Davis,” Marcus asked smoothly, adjusting his glasses. “You claim you rushed to help your daughter-in-law when she fell?”
“Of course,” Eleanor sniffed, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue. “I am a mother. My instinct is to nurture.”
Marcus pulled out a tablet and slid it across the table. “Then can you explain this footage?”
He hit play.
The video of Maya’s collapse played loudly in the silent room. Eleanor’s voice demanding mashed potatoes echoed off the walls. The sight of her calmly eating bread while Maya lay unconscious on the floor was damning.
Eleanor’s face drained of color. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.
Her lawyer stared at the screen in absolute horror. He had not been told about a video.
“Is that your instinct to nurture, Mrs. Davis?” Marcus asked coldly. “Or is that the instinct of a sociopath watching a woman bleed out on her floor?”

“This is out of context!” Eleanor shrieked, her composed facade completely shattering.
“We’re done here for today,” her lawyer said quickly, packing up his briefcase with furious, hurried motions.
