Chapter 8 - The Hidden Motive

Once I was moved from the ICU to a regular room, Claire brought in a lawyer.
She hadn't just been sitting around the hospital; she had been doing some digging.
“I went back to the house while you were sleeping yesterday,” Claire said, laying a thick manila folder on my bedside table.
“I wanted to know why Richard and Susan were in such an insane rush to pack up your late mother’s belongings in the attic.”
“Why?” I asked, adjusting my pillows.
“Because you turn twenty in two months, Leo,” Claire explained, her eyes flashing with anger.
“Your mother’s will stipulated that her antique collection and the trust fund attached to it transfer to you on your twentieth birthday.
If Richard sold them before then, he could claim the profits as household assets.”
My blood ran cold.
The heavy boxes.
The rush.
The total disregard for my well-being.
It wasn’t just impatience.
It was greed.
