My recovery was slow but steady.
The court battles, however, were swift and brutal.
Aunt Susan, terrified of being sued for poisoning a minor, threw Dad under the bus completely.
She testified that Dad forced her to give me the "energy pills" to make me work faster.
In return, Dad leaked documents proving Susan was embezzling from her own company.

Maya and I watched it all unfold from a safe distance.
Claire had been granted full custody of Maya, and since I was a legal adult, I was free of him entirely.
One afternoon, as I sat on the balcony overlooking the Spokane River, my phone buzzed.
It was an unknown number.
I let it go to voicemail.
When I listened to it, it was Dad.
He was crying.
He had lost the house to pay for his legal fees.
