Chapter 11 - The Trust

On my twentieth birthday, we didn't celebrate with a massive party.
It was just Claire, Maya, and me at a quiet Italian restaurant downtown.
That morning, the lawyers had officially transferred my mother’s trust into my name.
It was significantly more than Dad had ever let on.
My mother had been a brilliant investor before she passed away.
“What are you going to do with it?” Maya asked, twirling her spaghetti.
“First, I’m paying back Claire for everything she spent on my medical bills and the apartment,” I said, raising my glass of sparkling cider.
Claire waved her hand dismissively.
“Leo, you don't have to do that.”
“I want to,” I insisted.
“You saved my life, Claire.
Not just in the hallway that day, but every day since.
You're more of a parent to me than he ever was.”
Claire’s eyes welled up with tears, and she reached across the table to squeeze my hand.
