Chapter 1 - The Sirens' Song

The back of the ambulance was a blur of aggressive fluorescent lighting and frantic voices.

“Pushing epinephrine!” one of the EMTs shouted, his hands moving in a blur as he injected something into the IV line they had aggressively tapped into my arm.

The sound was a harsh reminder of how quickly everything had unraveled.

The monitor next to me began to shriek—a high, continuous tone that sent ice through my veins.
“He’s crashing! V-Fib! Charge to 200!”
I felt a heavy, cold weight pressed against my chest.
“Clear!”

My body violently arched off the gurney.
Darkness splintered into blinding white, and then, a terrifying, absolute silence swallowed me whole.
