Chapter 4 - The Confession

The waiting room felt like a vacuum.

Susan stood up, clutching her designer bag, looking everywhere but at the family.

“I… I didn’t give him drugs!” she stammered defensively.

“He was complaining about being tired all week!

I just gave him one of my metabolism boosters.

It’s practically a vitamin!

I needed him energized to help pack up the house!”

Dad stared at his sister, his jaw unhinged.

“You gave my son amphetamines without telling him?

You slipped it into his drink?”

“It’s a dietary supplement!” Susan shrieked, backing away.

“How was I supposed to know he had a defective heart?

You’re overreacting!”

SMACK.

The sound echoed loudly across the empty waiting area.

Susan stumbled back, clutching her cheek.

Claire stood before her, breathing heavily, her hand still raised.

“Get out,” Claire whispered, her voice vibrating with pure hatred.

“Get out of this hospital before I call the police and have you arrested for poisoning a minor.”

For once, Dad didn’t defend his sister.

He sank into a nearby chair, burying his face in his hands, realizing that his own toxic family had nearly murdered his son just to get some boxes moved.
