Chapter 13 - The Trap

Susan wasn't going to take no for an answer.
She reached across the table, her fingernails digging into my wrist.
“You ungrateful little brat! We raised you!”
I didn't flinch.
I just looked at the barista behind the counter, who had already picked up the phone and was dialing 911.
“Let go of me, Susan,” I said calmly.
“I’ll tell the press! I’ll tell everyone you stole your father's money!” she hissed, completely unhinged.
“Tell them,” I said.
“Tell them how you slipped amphetamines into a teenager with a heart condition.
I'm sure the local news would love the exclusive.”
Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder, echoing the very sound that had haunted my nightmares since the day I collapsed.
Susan realized what was happening too late.
She scrambled to stand up, knocking over her chair, but two police officers walked through the door before she could reach the exit.

I watched without a drop of pity as they slapped cuffs on her wrists and dragged her out into the rain.
