Chapter 20 - The Beat Goes On

Before going to bed, I walked into the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
I took off my shirt, tracing the slight bump on my upper left chest.
My heart was defective by birth, broken by my family, and saved by science and a stepmother’s fierce love.
My phone buzzed on the counter.
It was a news alert.
Former local businessman Richard Vance arrested on multiple counts of fraud in low-income housing scheme.
I read the headline, felt a brief second of pity for the miserable man he was, and then swiped the notification away into the trash, erasing him from my screen just as I had erased him from my life.
