Chapter 6 - The Enabler's Call

My phone rang late that night, displaying my mother's private number on the caller ID.

I debated ignoring it, but a part of me wanted to hear exactly what she had to say.

When I answered, her voice was trembling and weak, completely stripped of its usual haughty tone.

"Maya, sweetheart, please tell me this is all just a terrible misunderstanding," she whispered frantically.

I leaned back on my cheap sofa, staring up at my popcorn ceiling.

"There is no misunderstanding, Mom. Dad is a massive fraud, and you always knew it," I stated bluntly.

She began to hyperventilate, claiming she was just an innocent housewife who knew nothing about business.

"I have no money, Maya! They took my credit cards, my car, and they are threatening to take the house!"

I felt a brief flicker of pity, but I quickly extinguished it with the memory of her cold silence.

"You should have thought about your financial security before you let him treat me like garbage," I replied calmly.

She begged me to call the news stations and tell them I made the whole thing up.

She actually wanted me to go to prison for perjury just so she could keep her designer lifestyle.

Her selfishness was so deeply ingrained that she literally could not see beyond her own comfort.

"I will never cover for him again, Mom. You are completely on your own now," I told her firmly.

"You are a cruel, ungrateful child!" she suddenly snapped, her true colors shining through.

"No, I am exactly the daughter you raised. I just learned how to fight back," I whispered.

I hung up the phone and permanently blocked her number from my contacts.

The bridge connecting me to my past was finally, completely burned to ash.

I was entirely free to walk into the future without their heavy chains dragging me down.
