Chapter 19 - The Prison Transfer

News broke early the next week that Thomas Vance had been transferred to a maximum-security facility.
He had apparently tried to bribe a guard with money he no longer had, resulting in a massive conflict.
The other inmates quickly learned that he was an arrogant, wealthy fraud who had stolen from working-class people.
He was placed in solitary confinement for his own protection after multiple physical altercations in the yard.
The man who used to command rooms full of elite politicians was now entirely isolated in a concrete box.
He had exactly twenty-three hours a day to sit in total silence and reflect on his complete destruction.
He sent me one heavily redacted letter through the federal prison mail system, begging for my forgiveness.
The letter was stained with what looked like actual tears, claiming he loved me and was deeply sorry.
I didn't even bother reading the second page of his pathetic, manipulative lies.
I took a black permanent marker and wrote exactly two words across the front of the envelope.
"Return to Sender."
I dropped the letter into the outgoing mail slot, permanently severing the final thread of his existence in my world.
He was a ghost to me now, completely powerless and entirely forgotten.

I went back inside my warm apartment and poured myself a tall glass of expensive red wine.
I toasted to my beautiful, quiet living room, celebrating the incredible peace I had finally achieved.
