Chapter 10 - The Mother's Fall From Grace

My mother’s massive estate was officially seized by the bank due to multiple defaulted mortgage payments.
She was given exactly forty-eight hours to pack her personal belongings and vacate the premises.
Her wealthy country club friends did not offer her a place to stay, completely shunning her from their circles.
She was forced to rent a tiny, run-down motel room on the dangerous side of town.
She sat on the lumpy mattress, staring at the peeling wallpaper with tears streaming down her face.
She tried to apply for retail jobs, but she had absolutely zero work experience on her resume.
She finally swallowed her immense pride and took a minimum-wage job cleaning tables at a local diner.
The irony was absolutely staggering.
The woman who used to fire maids for leaving a speck of dust was now scrubbing sticky syrup off cheap tables.
One afternoon, a group of her former socialite friends walked into the diner for a casual lunch.
My mother tried to hide in the back kitchen, terrified of the impending humiliation.
But the manager yelled at her to get out onto the floor and serve the customers immediately.
She slowly walked over to their booth, her head bowed in deep shame, holding a dirty rag.
The women recognized her instantly, and cruel, mocking whispers erupted around the table.
They did not leave her a single dime for a tip when they finally left the restaurant.

My mother realized that her cowardly loyalty to a monster had cost her absolutely everything.
She was finally living the miserable, difficult life she had always convinced herself she was far too good for.
