Chapter 15 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching a unanimous decision.
The courtroom was completely packed, buzzing with intense anticipation as the foreman stood up.
My father stood at the defense table, his hands trembling violently as he awaited his ultimate fate.
"On the charge of federal wire fraud, we find the defendant guilty," the foreman read clearly.
The word 'guilty' echoed over and over as the foreman read through all forty-seven federal charges.
Racketeering, grand larceny, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit fraud; guilty on every single count.
My father’s knees completely buckled, and he collapsed back into his wooden chair, breathing heavily.
The judge did not offer him even a single ounce of mercy during the official sentencing phase.
"Thomas Vance, you are a predator who fed on the trust of your community," the judge declared sternly.
He sentenced my father to forty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
The heavy sound of the judge's gavel striking the wood felt like a massive weight lifting off my chest.
Two armed bailiffs immediately stepped forward and roughly handcuffed my father's wrists behind his back.
As they dragged him toward the side door, he looked back at me one final time.
There was no anger left in his eyes; there was only absolute, crushing despair.

I did not smile, nor did I frown.
I simply watched him disappear into the dark hallway, permanently erased from society.
