Chapter 13 - The Star Witness Takes the Stand

On the third day of the trial, my name was loudly called by the bailiff.
A heavy silence fell over the courtroom as I confidently walked up to the witness stand.
I placed my hand on the Bible, swearing to tell the absolute truth, and sat down in the wooden chair.
Sarah, the lead prosecutor, approached me with a warm but serious expression.
"Miss Vance, could you please explain to the jury how you discovered the hidden offshore accounts?" she asked clearly.
I spoke directly into the microphone, my voice echoing strongly through the silent room.
I detailed the complex network of shell companies my father used to funnel dirty money out of the country.
I explained how I had secretly copied his hard drives while he was out playing golf with politicians.
The defense attorney aggressively stood up, attempting to completely assassinate my character.
"Isn't it true that you are just a bitter, jealous daughter seeking revenge for a family disagreement?" he shouted.
I looked directly at the jury, making sure they saw the absolute sincerity in my eyes.
"I am a daughter who was brutally assaulted for daring to speak the truth about a criminal," I stated calmly.
I pulled back my hair, revealing the faint, lingering scar on my jawline from his heavy gold ring.
A collective gasp echoed from the jury box, completely destroying the defense's narrative.

The defense attorney sat down in defeat, having absolutely no counterargument against the undeniable truth.
I had effectively nailed the coffin shut on my father's entire defense strategy.
