Chapter 9 - The Ambush

Arthur Sterling was not a man who was used to losing, and he was rapidly running out of options.
He decided that if he could not buy my silence, he would have to physically force it.
I was walking to my car after a meeting with my attorney when a black SUV suddenly blocked my path.
Two massive men in dark suits stepped out, cornering me against a brick wall in the parking garage.
Arthur slowly stepped out of the back seat, leaning heavily on a wooden cane.
He looked ten years older, his face gaunt and his eyes burning with absolute, murderous rage.
"You arrogant little bitch, you think you can destroy my legacy?" Arthur hissed, stepping closer.
He raised his hand, balling it into a tight fist, preparing to strike me again.
But I was no longer the terrified wife standing in his grand ballroom.
I didn't flinch, I didn't cower, and I certainly didn't apologize.
I simply reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my phone, displaying a live video feed.
"I am currently streaming this interaction directly to my lawyer and a private security firm," I stated calmly.
I warned him that if his men touched me, the FBI would have him in handcuffs within five minutes.
Arthur froze, his fist hovering in the air as he stared at the red recording dot on my screen.
He knew that one more assault charge would instantly put him behind bars without bail.
He slowly lowered his hand, his chest heaving with defeated, impotent fury.

He spat on the ground near my shoes, turned around, and climbed back into his SUV.
He was a broken, pathetic old man, and he finally knew it.
