Chapter 5 - The Process Server

Arthur Sterling was currently screaming at his board of directors in his towering glass office.
He was desperately trying to explain why the federal government had raided their subsidiary branches.
Julian was sitting in the corner, sweating profusely and completely silent.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open without any warning.
A man in a cheap grey suit walked right past Arthur’s expensive, armed security team.
"Arthur Sterling? Julian Sterling?" the man asked loudly, holding two thick manila envelopes.
Arthur’s face turned bright red as he ordered his guards to throw the man out of the building.
Before anyone could move, the man tossed the envelopes directly onto the polished mahogany table.
"You have officially been served," the process server announced with a smug smile.
Julian opened his envelope first, his hands shaking so violently he could barely tear the paper.
He read the first page and felt a sickening drop in his stomach.
It was a highly aggressive divorce filing, demanding total asset liquidation and spousal support.
Arthur ripped open his envelope and found a massive civil lawsuit for physical assault and emotional distress.
Attached to the lawsuit was a high-resolution photograph of my bruised, bleeding face.
The board of directors stared at Arthur, their faces twisted in absolute disgust and horror.
They were ruthless businessmen, but public domestic violence was a public relations nightmare they could not survive.
The lead investor stood up, packed his briefcase, and walked out of the room without a word.

The rest of the board quickly followed, abandoning Arthur in his moment of absolute crisis.
The invincible Sterling empire was rapidly crumbling into dust.
