Chapter 2 - The Empty House

I drove straight to the luxury penthouse Julian and I shared in the city.
I knew Julian wouldn't be home yet because he never left a party before his father permitted it.
I grabbed my largest suitcase and began throwing my clothes and essential documents inside.
I did not take the diamond necklaces, the designer bags, or the expensive watches they had gifted me.
I wanted absolutely nothing that had been paid for with Arthur Sterling’s dirty money.
I walked into Julian’s home office and booted up his unsecured desktop computer.
I plugged in my encrypted flash drive and initiated the final, massive data transfer.
I was downloading the last batch of offshore banking passwords that Arthur thought were safe.
My phone began to buzz aggressively on the desk next to the keyboard.
It was Julian, calling me for the first time since I walked out of the banquet.
I stared at his name on the screen, feeling absolutely nothing but pure disgust.
He was probably calling to demand that I come back and apologize to save his reputation.
I picked up the phone, blocked his number permanently, and tossed it into the trash can.
The data transfer reached one hundred percent, and a green checkmark flashed on the screen.
I pulled the flash drive out and dropped it into my purse like a loaded weapon.
I left my massive diamond wedding ring sitting right in the center of Julian’s keyboard.

I walked out of the penthouse and handed my keys to the night doorman.
I was never stepping foot in that toxic cage ever again.
