Chapter 15 - The Mother's Downfall

Eleanor Sterling had miraculously avoided federal prison because she truly knew nothing about the business.
However, avoiding prison did not mean she had avoided the massive, crushing consequences of reality.
Because all of the marital assets were seized, she was left absolutely penniless and homeless.
Her incredibly wealthy socialite friends had completely abandoned her, refusing to answer her desperate phone calls.
She was forced to move into a tiny, run-down apartment complex on the very outskirts of the city.
She had to sell her remaining designer dresses and handbags just to afford basic groceries.
One afternoon, she was walking to the local bus stop, wearing an old sweater and carrying cheap bags.
It started to rain heavily, soaking her completely as she waited for public transportation.
A large puddle splashed her legs as a passing car drove by too quickly.
She dropped her grocery bags, falling to her knees in the cold rain, and finally broke down.
She sobbed uncontrollably, mourning the loss of her maids, her drivers, and her endless supply of champagne.
She realized that she had sacrificed her entire moral compass for a lifestyle that was completely gone.
She had stood by and watched her husband abuse people, and now she was paying the ultimate price.

Nobody stopped to help her up from the wet pavement.
She was completely alone, totally invisible, and entirely forgotten by the world she used to rule.
