Chapter 9 - The Mother’s Reality Check

Victoria was still sitting in the women’s detention center, waiting for her bail hearing.
She had used her one phone call to contact her best friend, a wealthy senator’s wife.
Victoria assumed her powerful social circle would rally behind her to fix the situation.
When the senator’s wife finally answered, her tone was icy and distant.
The woman bluntly told Victoria that she was a toxic liability and a criminal.
She explicitly ordered Victoria to never contact her or her family ever again.
The line went dead, leaving Victoria staring at the prison phone in absolute shock.
The realization hit her like a freight train crashing through a brick wall.
Her entire identity was built on country clubs, charity galas, and fake friendships.
Without the stolen money, she was absolutely nothing to these people.
A female guard yelled at Victoria to get back in line with the other inmates.
Victoria tried to pull rank, screaming that she was a VIP who deserved special treatment.
The guard simply laughed and shoved her roughly toward the crowded holding cell.
Victoria stumbled and fell to the dirty floor, ruining her expensive silk blouse.
None of the other inmates offered to help her up.
She sat on the cold concrete, wrapping her arms around her knees, and finally broke down.
She cried for her lost mansions, her lost jewels, and her lost status.
She did not shed a single tear for the daughter she had abused for a decade.

Her selfishness was so deeply ingrained that it blinded her to reality.
She was exactly where she belonged.
