Chapter 8 - The Desperate Father

Arthur Sterling had miraculously managed to post a massive bail bond.
He had begged his few remaining shady contacts for a high-interest, dangerous loan.
He walked out of the prison wearing the same wrinkled suit from the Christmas Eve dinner.
He looked ten years older, his face gaunt and his arrogant posture completely broken.
He immediately hired a cheap burner phone and managed to track down my new office address.
He stormed past the security guards in the lobby, screaming my name like a madman.
My personal security team intercepted him right as he stepped off the elevator.
They pinned him against the glass wall, patting him down for weapons.
I walked out of my office slowly, holding a cup of hot tea.
Arthur glared at me, his eyes wide with a manic, desperate fury.
He demanded that I call the SEC and retract my whistleblower testimony.
He threatened to destroy my life if I did not fix the mess I had created.
I took a slow sip of my tea, staring at him with absolute, chilling indifference.
I reminded him that he had zero power, zero money, and zero influence left.
I pointed to the security cameras in the hallway, letting him know he was being recorded.
I told him that threatening a federal witness would easily add ten years to his sentence.
Arthur’s face crumpled, and he suddenly fell to his knees, begging for mercy.
He cried crocodile tears, calling me his beloved daughter and begging for a second chance.

I looked down at the man who had laughed when my mother struck me.
I told security to throw him out into the street.
