Chapter 8 - The Police Arrive
"You are completely insane!" Clara screamed, stumbling backward away from the pepper spray.
"I am calling the police on you for threatening me!"
"Go right ahead," I challenged her, leaning casually against the back of my car.
She actually pulled out her phone and dialed emergency services, sobbing fake tears into the receiver.
She claimed her elderly mother was having a psychotic break and threatening her with a weapon.
Two police cruisers arrived within exactly five minutes, their lights flashing brightly in the quiet suburban neighborhood.
The officers stepped out, looking confused by the sight of a well-dressed older woman casually holding a box of books.
Clara immediately ran toward them, pointing her manicured finger directly at my face.
"Arrest her! She tried to attack me!" Clara wailed dramatically.
I calmly handed the pepper spray to the closest officer and handed him my state identification.
"My name is Margaret Sterling, and this woman is trespassing on my private property," I explained clearly.
"She assaulted me on Christmas Eve, and I have a documented police report and medical records from the hospital."
The officer ran my name through the system and immediately saw the assault report I had filed the day after the incident.
His entire demeanor shifted from cautious to incredibly stern as he turned back to Clara.
"Ma'am, you need to step away from the homeowner immediately," the officer ordered Clara.
"But she is stealing my inheritance!" Clara screeched, completely exposing her true, greedy motives.
"This is a civil matter regarding the property, but you are currently criminally trespassing," the officer warned her.
"If you do not leave this property in exactly thirty seconds, I will arrest you and put you in handcuffs."

Clara looked between me and the officers, realizing for the very first time that she had completely lost all of her power.
She spat a vile curse at me, stomped back to her SUV, and sped away down the street.
