Chapter 18 - A New Romance

At sixty-five years old, I honestly believed that romance was entirely in my distant past.

But life has a incredibly beautiful way of surprising you when you finally clear out the toxic clutter.

I met a man named Thomas at a local charity golf tournament hosted by the resort.

He was a retired architect, a widower, and possessed the kindest, most genuine laugh I had ever heard.

He did not demand things from me, and he did not try to control my life or my schedule.

We spent our days walking along the beach, visiting local art galleries, and cooking elaborate meals together.

He knew the entire, ugly story about Clara, and he never judged me for my absolute boundaries.

"You survived a war, Margaret," Thomas told me one evening as we watched the sunset from my balcony.

"You have absolutely earned the right to guard your peace like a fortress."

He held my hand, his strong, gentle fingers interlacing with mine.

I realized that by cutting Clara completely out of my life, I had actually made room for real, unconditional love to enter it.

I was no longer entirely consumed by anxiety or desperately trying to fix a broken, toxic person.

I was simply living my life entirely for myself, exactly how I wanted to live it.

Thomas asked me to move in with him, but I politely declined, choosing to maintain my fierce independence.

He completely respected my decision, simply buying a condo in the exact same building so we could be close.

It was an entirely perfect, deeply respectful partnership.
