Chapter 14 - The Final Attempt

Nearly a year passed in total, absolute, blissful peace.

I joined a local book club, started playing tennis every morning, and made wonderful new friends in my community.

My life was full of vibrant joy, entirely free of the dark, suffocating cloud Clara had always brought with her.

It was a warm Tuesday afternoon when I walked out to my complex's main gate to check the mail.

I noticed a ragged-looking woman pacing nervously on the sidewalk outside the heavy iron security gates.

She was wearing an oversized sweater and looked terribly thin and entirely exhausted.

It took me a full minute to actually recognize my own daughter.

Clara had somehow managed to track down my new, private address in Florida.

She saw me standing near the mailboxes and immediately ran up to the iron bars, gripping them tightly.

"Mom!" she cried out, her voice cracking with raw, unedited desperation.

I completely froze, my heart pounding slightly, but I did not take a single step toward her.

"I took a bus for two days just to find you," she sobbed, tears streaming down her pale, dirty cheeks.

"I am living in a homeless shelter, I have absolutely nothing left."

"Please, I will do anything, I will scrub your floors, just don't let me die on the streets."

I looked into her eyes, searching for any actual sign of the daughter I used to love so deeply.

But all I saw was a stranger, entirely broken by her own arrogant, vicious choices.

I did not feel anger, and I certainly did not feel an ounce of pity.

I felt absolutely nothing at all.
