Chapter 20 - The Final Sunset

I spent my seventieth birthday entirely surrounded by the people who truly, genuinely loved me.

Thomas had organized a beautiful sunset dinner cruise on a private yacht.

Arthur and his family were there, along with my closest friends from the resort community.

The champagne flowed freely, and the warm ocean breeze danced gently through my hair.

I stood at the railing of the boat, looking out at the massive, fiery orange sun dipping below the horizon.

I thought about the woman standing in that ruined dining room, holding her bruised face while her world collapsed.

If I could go back in time, I would not change a single second of that horrific night.

That brutal, stinging slap was the exact catalyst that woke me up from a lifelong, enabling nightmare.

It was the absolute greatest gift Clara could have ever given me.

Because it forced me to realize that my worth was not determined by my endless sacrifices to a completely ungrateful person.

My worth was entirely mine to claim, and I had claimed it beautifully.

Thomas walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about, my beautiful Margaret?" he whispered softly.

I leaned back into his warm embrace, smiling entirely at the brilliant, glowing horizon.

"I am just thinking about how absolutely perfect it is to finally be free," I answered.

And as the sun completely set on the ocean, my new, beautiful life shined brighter than ever before.
