Chapter 4 - The Legal Meeting

The law offices of Harrison & Tate were entirely quiet the day after Christmas.
Mr. Harrison, a silver-haired man who had known my family for decades, ushered me into his large, mahogany-paneled office.
He took one look at the visible bruise on my jaw and his eyes widened in shock.
"Margaret, dear god, what on earth happened to you?" he asked, pouring me a glass of ice water.
"Clara happened," I stated plainly, taking a seat in the leather chair opposite his desk.
"And that is exactly why I am here today."
I opened my purse and pulled out a copy of my current will and trust documents.
"I need you to completely remove Clara from my will, effective immediately," I ordered.
Mr. Harrison blinked, clearly stunned by the absolute coldness in my voice.
"Margaret, she is your only child, and your estate is worth over three million dollars," he cautioned gently.
"Are you absolutely certain you want to make such a drastic, permanent decision?"
"I have never been more certain of anything in my entire life, Richard," I replied without hesitation.
"She struck me across the face in my own dining room in front of my entire family."
"She will not receive another single dime of my money, my property, or my legacy."
Mr. Harrison nodded slowly, pulling a legal pad toward him.
"Who would you like to list as the primary beneficiary of the estate?" he asked professionally.
"Leave ten percent to my brother, Arthur, and the rest to the pediatric cancer ward where I used to work," I instructed.
"I want her to know that her inheritance went to children who actually know the value of life."

We spent the next two hours drafting the ironclad legal documents.
When I signed my name at the bottom of the final page, a massive weight instantly lifted off my shoulders.
