Chapter 8 - The Desperate Apology

Two weeks passed, and my life with Lucas had never been more peaceful.

We baked cookies, went to the zoo, and laughed loudly in our beautiful, safe home.

One evening, as I was reading Lucas a bedtime story, the front gate intercom buzzed.

I checked the security monitor and saw Marcus standing outside the heavy iron gates.

He looked terrible, unshaven, wearing dirty clothes, and shivering in the cold wind.

I told Maria, the nanny, to stay with Lucas while I handled the garbage outside.

I walked down the long driveway and stood safely behind the locked iron bars.

“Clara, please, you have to help me,” Marcus begged, his voice cracking with desperation.

“Vanessa left me, and I have not eaten a real meal in three days.”

I stared at him without a single ounce of pity in my heart.

“Why would I help a man who told my son he was not part of this family?” I asked coldly.

“I was angry, I made a mistake!” he sobbed, dropping to his knees on the concrete.

“I love you, Clara, and I love Lucas, please let me come home!”

“You do not love anyone but yourself, Marcus.”

“And this is not your home anymore, it is my fortress.”

I turned my back on him and began walking away.

“Clara, wait! I will do anything!” he screamed into the night.

I did not stop, and I did not look back.

I pressed a button on my remote, and the automated sprinklers turned on, soaking him completely.
