Chapter 1 - The Chuckle That Ended It All

Marcus chuckled, a low and arrogant sound that echoed through my beautiful living room.

He took a slow step toward me, crossing his arms over his expensive grey suit.

“You are being completely hysterical, Clara.”

“This house is marital property, and you cannot just kick us out.”

I did not raise my voice, nor did I shed a single tear.

I simply pulled my cell phone from my pocket and pressed a single button on my screen.

“Actually, Marcus, if you had bothered to read the deed you signed last year, you would know this house is owned solely by my family's trust.”

“You are legally nothing but a guest here.”

Eleanor scoffed loudly from the velvet armchair, clutching the baby closer to her chest.

“Do not listen to her, Marcus, she is just throwing a tantrum because she cannot handle the truth.”

“Julian is the true heir to the Sterling name, and she knows it.”

Vanessa smiled smugly, tracing a manicured finger along the collar of Marcus’s jacket.

“Maybe you should go to a hotel tonight, Clara, until you calm down.”

I completely ignored the mistress and looked right into my husband’s eyes.

“I just activated the panic button for the private security firm that monitors this estate.”

“They will be here in less than three minutes, accompanied by the local police.”

Marcus’s arrogant smile finally began to slip from his handsome face.

“You did not call the police on your own husband.”

“I called the police on three trespassers who have been abusing my five-year-old son,” I corrected him coldly.

I pointed to the small, blinking green light hidden in the crown molding of the ceiling.

“And I have every single minute of your behavior recorded in high definition.”

Eleanor gasped, her face turning a sickly shade of pale as she looked up at the camera.

Vanessa stepped away from Marcus, her eyes widening in sudden, genuine fear.

The sound of heavy sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.

I held Lucas tightly against my chest, breathing in the scent of his messy hair.

The game was over, and they had just lost everything.
