Chapter 4 - The Financial Freeze

Monday morning arrived with a bright, beautiful sunrise.

I walked Lucas to his private preschool, holding his hand and singing his favorite songs.

He looked handsome in his clean uniform, completely untouched by the poison of his father.

Meanwhile, across the city, Marcus was experiencing the worst morning of his miserable life.

My attorney, David, called me just as I was sipping my morning espresso.

“Clara, the financial freeze was a complete success,” David reported happily.

“Marcus attempted to use his corporate card to pay for a luxury hotel suite for Vanessa and Eleanor.”

“The card was declined in front of the entire hotel lobby.”

I smiled into my coffee cup, picturing Eleanor’s face turning bright red in public.

“What about the business accounts?” I asked, opening my laptop.

“Completely locked down, pending a full audit of his spending,” David confirmed.

“He is effectively bankrupt as of 9:00 AM this morning.”

Just then, my cell phone began to vibrate violently on the marble counter.

The caller ID flashed with Marcus’s name, followed by ten rapid-fire text messages.

He was demanding to know why his accounts were frozen and screaming about lawyers.

I calmly hit the block button, erasing his existence from my digital life.

I had no intention of arguing with a man who had already lost the war.

I dressed in my sharpest black suit and grabbed my briefcase.

It was time to pay a visit to Marcus’s precious startup company.

He thought he was the CEO, but he was about to learn who really owned the throne.
