Chapter 8 - The Emergency

My knees buckled, and Julian had to catch my full weight before I hit the floor.
"The baby is coming," I gasped, gripping his expensive suit jacket with white knuckles.
"It is too early!" Julian panicked, scooping me up effortlessly into his strong arms.
"Someone call an ambulance right now!" he roared at the chaotic courtroom.
The adrenaline masked the pain for a few moments, but the contractions were coming incredibly fast.
The stress and trauma of the past two weeks had finally pushed my body to its absolute limit.
We rushed out of the courthouse just as the screaming sirens of an ambulance approached.
The paramedics loaded me onto a stretcher, and Julian refused to let go of my hand.
"Just breathe, baby, you are incredibly strong," Julian encouraged me as the ambulance sped through traffic.
I squeezed his hand so hard I thought I might break his fingers.
Every bump in the road sent waves of blinding agony radiating through my entire body.
When we arrived at the hospital, an entire team of doctors and nurses was waiting for us.
They rushed me through the bright, white hallways directly to the emergency delivery room.
"The baby's heart rate is dropping, we have to do this right now!" the lead doctor shouted.
