Chapter 5 - The Courtroom Lies

Two weeks later, I sat in the front row of the crowded courthouse.
My burns were heavily bandaged beneath my dress, but I refused to miss this trial.
Julian looked exhausted in his orange jumpsuit, his eyes locking onto mine the moment he entered.

Eleanor sat in the witness stand, wearing a fake neck brace and dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
"He just snapped out of nowhere," Eleanor lied smoothly to the jury.
"I was merely serving tea, and he attacked me like a wild animal."
Beatrice was next to testify, performing a masterclass in fake, dramatic sorrow.
"My poor mother was just trying to be a loving mother-in-law," Beatrice cried into the microphone.
"Julian is a danger to society and a danger to his poor pregnant wife."
The jury looked at Julian with visible disgust, completely fooled by the theatrical performance.
The prosecuting attorney rested his case, looking incredibly confident in a guilty verdict.
Then, Mr. Sterling slowly stood up from the defense table.
He smoothed his expensive suit and walked confidently toward the center of the courtroom.
