Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

Grace wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead, her muscles aching from hours of continuous, grueling labor.

The laundry wing of Whitmore House was tucked away in the basement, a windowless, humid corridor filled with the heavy scent of bleach and lavender.

She bent down and hoisted a massive, woven basket overflowing with damp, high-end Egyptian cotton towels.

Her lower back protested in sharp, agonizing pain, a harsh reminder of the double shift she had worked at the diner the night before.

But Grace simply gritted her teeth and adjusted her grip on the wicker handles, refusing to let the pain slow her down.

She could not afford to take a break, especially not after Mrs. Gable had brutally docked her pay for the broken plate that morning.

Every single towel she folded, every floor she scrubbed, was another precious dollar toward her little brother's heart medication.

She began walking down the long, dimly lit hallway, her rubber-soled shoes squeaking softly against the polished linoleum floor.

She was so entirely consumed by her financial anxiety that she did not notice the large, menacing shadow completely blocking the exit.

As she turned the corner to head toward the main service elevators, a heavy, muscular arm suddenly shot out from the darkness.

Victor Haines stepped directly into her path, his face twisted into an ugly, unrecognizable mask of pure hatred.

Grace gasped loudly, the heavy basket slipping from her tired fingers and crashing onto the floor.

The pristine white towels spilled out across the damp linoleum, but Grace did not dare bend down to pick them up.

"You think you are so incredibly smart, don't you, Grace?" Victor hissed, his voice echoing violently in the narrow corridor.

Grace took a terrified step backward, her heart hammering violently against her ribcage like a trapped bird.

"Victor, what are you doing down here?" Grace asked, her voice trembling as she noticed the wild, unhinged look in his eyes.

"You are supposed to be out at the front security gate."

Victor let out a dry, humorless laugh that made the tiny hairs on the back of Grace's neck stand completely straight up.

"I am not at the gate because I was just fired, you miserable little rat," Victor spat, taking another aggressive step forward.

"And I know exactly who made the pathetic, whining phone call to the corporate office to get me terminated."

Grace shook her head frantically, holding her hands up in a desperate gesture of surrender.

"I swear to you, Victor, I have not spoken to anyone since this morning!" Grace pleaded, tears of genuine panic welling in her eyes.

"I have been down in the laundry room for the last three hours trying to finish my assigned duties."

"Do not lie to my face!" Victor roared, completely losing what little self-control he had left.

He lunged forward with terrifying speed, his large hand wrapping violently around Grace's slender upper arm.

His grip was brutally tight, his thick fingers digging painfully into her soft skin and instantly forming deep purple bruises.

Grace cried out in terrible pain, completely dropping her defensive posture as she desperately tried to pry his heavy fingers off her arm.

"Let go of me, Victor, you are hurting me!" she screamed, her voice cracking with absolute terror.

Victor leaned in so close she could feel the furious, hot heat of his breath against her cheek.

"You are going to march right upstairs, call human resources, and tell them you made the whole story up," Victor threatened dangerously.

Before he could even finish his violent demand, the heavy reinforced steel doors at the end of the hallway suddenly blew completely open.

The loud, metallic crash echoed through the basement like a literal bomb detonating.

Grace and Victor both froze in absolute shock, their eyes darting toward the sudden explosion of sound.

Standing in the doorway, silhouetted by the bright overhead lights of the main estate, was a man radiating pure, unadulterated wrath.
