Chapter 7 - The Termination

The midday sun broke through the heavy Connecticut clouds, casting a bright, golden light over the sprawling grounds of Whitmore House.
Victor Haines stood near the front security booth, casually leaning against the expensive imported stone of the pillar.
He was sipping a hot cup of premium coffee, laughing loudly at a joke told by one of the junior security guards.
His chest was puffed out with arrogant pride, fully believing he was the absolute master of his domain.
In his twisted mind, he had successfully protected the estate from a disgusting vagrant and put a disobedient maid back in her place.
He took another sip of his coffee, completely unaware that a massive, invisible guillotine was currently swinging down toward his neck.
Suddenly, the heavy, military-grade radio strapped to his thick tactical belt buzzed with an aggressive burst of static.
"Haines, report to the main security office immediately," the stern, uncompromising voice of Chief Harrison commanded over the secure frequency.
Victor smirked, tapping the radio on his shoulder to respond with a false sense of casual confidence.
"Copy that, Chief, I am on my way," Victor replied, winking at the junior guard standing next to him.
"He probably wants to personally thank me for keeping the perimeter clear of the local trash this morning," Victor boasted proudly.
He adjusted his shiny silver badge, puffed out his chest, and began the short walk toward the administrative wing of the mansion.
When Victor pushed open the heavy glass door of the security office, his confident smile instantly vanished.
Chief Harrison was not sitting behind his large desk looking relaxed or pleased.
Instead, the Chief was standing rigidly in the center of the room, his face pale and slick with a sudden, nervous sweat.
Sitting directly on the center of the Chief's desk was a single, empty brown cardboard box.
"Close the door, Victor," Chief Harrison ordered, his voice completely devoid of its usual friendly tone.
Victor slowly pulled the door shut, a cold, uncomfortable knot of anxiety suddenly forming deep in the pit of his stomach.
"Is there a problem, Chief?" Victor asked cautiously, his eyes darting toward the empty cardboard box.
"You are done here, Victor," the Chief said bluntly, refusing to make eye contact with his former employee.
"Hand over your badge, your radio, your estate keys, and your company-issued firearm immediately."
Victor actually laughed out loud, assuming this was some kind of elaborate, poorly timed practical joke.
"Come on, Chief, what are you talking about?" Victor asked, a nervous edge creeping into his voice.
"I am talking about your immediate and permanent termination from Whitmore Global Security," the Chief snapped, finally looking up with terrified eyes.
"Orders came directly from the top executive floor in Manhattan less than five minutes ago."
"Mr. Whitmore’s senior advisor called my private line and demanded your immediate removal from this property."
Victor’s jaw dropped open in absolute, paralyzing shock.
"Manhattan?" Victor stammered, his mind racing desperately to make sense of the catastrophic news.
"I have never even met anyone from the corporate office, let alone given them a reason to fire me!"
"They didn't give me a reason, and they didn't offer you a severance package," Chief Harrison replied coldly.
"You are being stripped of all company benefits, your health insurance is cancelled, and you have exactly ten minutes to pack your personal belongings."
"If you are not off this property in ten minutes, I have been explicitly ordered to have you arrested for criminal trespassing."
Victor reached for his badge with trembling fingers, his entire arrogant world completely crashing down around him.

He unclipped the silver shield and tossed it into the cardboard box, his face burning with overwhelming humiliation.
He had walked into this room feeling like a king, and he was walking out as an unemployed, disgraced failure.
