Chapter 19 - The Real Reward

Adrian Whitmore, the ruthless billionaire who terrified Wall Street executives on a daily basis, knelt entirely on the cold concrete floor.
He completely ignored the expensive fabric of his bespoke suit brushing against the dirty basement tiles.
His entire focus was completely locked on the violently shaking, terrified young woman sobbing in front of him.
He gently reached out his large, warm hand and placed it softly on Grace’s trembling shoulder.
"Breathe, Grace, you are completely safe now," Adrian whispered, his voice incredibly soft and remarkably tender.
Grace let out a loud, ragged gasp, wiping her tear-soaked cheeks with the back of her trembling hand.
She looked at the empty space where the heavy steel handcuffs had just dragged her tormentor away.
"I thought... I truly thought I was going to lose everything," Grace cried, completely overwhelmed by the terrifying adrenaline crash.
"I thought my little brother was going to die because I would be locked away in a federal prison."
Adrian’s dark eyes flashed with a deep, profound sorrow as he heard the absolute despair in her breaking voice.
He slowly stood up and offered her his hand, helping her pull herself off the freezing concrete floor.
He did not call for the other terrified maids to assist her, nor did he order the security guards to clean up the mess.
Instead, the billionaire owner of the estate personally bent down and began picking up her scattered belongings.
He carefully gathered her cheap plastic hairbrush, her faded cardigan, and the stack of terrifying medical bills.
He placed them gently back into her worn canvas tote bag, treating her modest possessions with absolute, undivided respect.
"I owe you a profound apology, Grace," Adrian stated firmly, handing the bag back to her.
"I knew Thomas was a jealous, vindictive snake, and I used you as bait to permanently trap him."
"I should never have allowed you to feel that incredible, agonizing panic, even for a few seconds."
Grace shook her head slowly, clutching her canvas bag tightly against her chest like a protective shield.
"You saved my life, Mr. Whitmore, and you proved my innocence in front of the entire household," Grace replied softly.
"I could never be angry at you for protecting your own home from terrible people."
Adrian looked at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe, completely amazed by her endless capacity for forgiveness.
"You were on your way out the door when the lockdown occurred," Adrian noted, glancing at her casual civilian clothing.
"You were going to the hospital to sit with your brother, weren't you?"
Grace nodded, a fresh wave of tears instantly welling up in her exhausted brown eyes.
"His condition worsened this afternoon, and the doctors said he urgently needs an experimental surgery to repair his heart valve," Grace explained, her voice cracking.
"The hospital administration refuses to schedule the operation until I can provide a massive down payment that I simply do not have."
Adrian did not say a single word in response.
He gently placed his hand on the small of her back and guided her out of the crowded, silent basement.
He led her up the grand staircase, down the main hallway, and directly out the heavy front doors into the pouring rain.
His black Bentley Phantom was already idling directly in front of the sweeping marble steps, the driver standing by with a large black umbrella.
"Get in the car, Grace," Adrian commanded gently, opening the heavy rear door for her himself.
"We are going to Saint Jude’s Pediatric Hospital right now, and we are going to fix this."
Grace felt her entire world completely stop spinning as she slid into the warm, luxurious leather seat.
As the powerful car sped off into the stormy night, Adrian pulled out his private cell phone and made a single, incredibly important phone call.
He didn't just call the hospital; he called the Chief of Cardiology directly on his personal home line.
"This is Adrian Whitmore," the billionaire said coldly into the receiver.
